After our careful research and the examination of previous scholarship on ecotourism in Costa Rica as well as current events happening there we are uncomfortable with branding Costa Rica as undeserving of its status as an environmental leader and ecotourism model.

In many ways it continues to outperform much larger and wealthier nations in terms of commitment to the environment and practice of ecotourism. That being said, this research has uncovered underlying issues present that threaten to undermine the success, sustainability and reputation of Costa Rica as a world leader on environmental sustainability and healthy utilization of environmental resources over the long term. We continue to regard theoretical ecotourism in the abstract as an ideal worthy of pursuit.

CONCLUSION

We have found no evidence to contradict the notion that the linking of the economy and long-term utilization of natural resources for visitation and appreciation can be compared with alternative consumption-based alternatives such as large scale agriculture, deforestation, or mass tourism.

Unfortunately we find the application of these ideals when placed into real word situations in the context of a larger global capitalist system problematic. The temptation for short-term large economic gains for individuals will always threaten to erode the practice of responsible environmental sustainability wherever it takes place. The ethical and moral commitments are quite high for all participants involved in the successful practice of ecotourism. This includes individuals owning tourist operations down to the individual employees carrying out daily operations, as well as the overarching governing bodies, and finally the tourists themselves.

In short, the dynamics and ramifications within ecotourism are complex, incorporating economic, social, and environmental factors difficult to unwind from one another. The consequences of these processes are not always transparent, easily identifiable or understood.  Moving forward, it is important to insist on ecotourism being practiced at the most authentic level attainable and constant vigilance and preoccupation is vital. This is true for Costa Rica as much as throughout the Americas and globe as the appetite for tourism and global mobility continues to increase while more countries look to ecotourism as an economic strategy and developmental model. This increasing competition only stresses the already thin line in regards to balancing responsible environmental management and economic success.
